Candle label sizes: how to measure your jar
Jars and tins vary a lot between suppliers, so the only reliable way to choose a label size is to measure your own container. It takes two minutes with a ruler or a soft tape measure.
Step 1: measure the flat area
Look at the side of the jar and find the part that is straight up and down — not the curved shoulder near the top or the rounded edge near the bottom. Measure its height. Your label should be a little shorter than this, usually about 1/4" shorter, so it doesn't wrinkle over the curves.
Step 2: decide which kind of label you want
- Front label (round or rectangle) on the side of the jar. The most common choice for small makers.
- Wrap-around label that goes all the way around the jar.
- Lid label on top of a tin or a lid.
- Bottom label for the warning text and your contact details.
Step 3: work out the size
Round front labels
A round label should be no taller than the flat area you measured. As a rule of thumb, 2" round labels suit small jars and tins, 2.5"–3" round labels suit larger jars. Hold a paper circle of each size against the jar to see which looks right.
Rectangle front labels
Keep the height under the flat area, and the width under about a third of the jar's circumference so the label stays flat on the curve. Our generator has 3 × 2" and 4.5 × 3" layouts.
Wrap-around labels: the formula
Circumference = π × diameter (π ≈ 3.14). Measure the jar's outside diameter, multiply by 3.14, then add about 1/4" if you want the ends to overlap. For example, a jar with a 3" outside diameter has a circumference of about 9.42", so a full wrap is about 9.7" long. If you don't want the ends to meet, simply make the label shorter.
Lid and bottom labels
Measure the flat inner part of the lid or base and choose a round label about 1/4" smaller. Bottom labels are a good place for the fire safety warning; our warning generator has 2" round, 2 × 1", 3 × 1" and 2.5 × 1.5" sizes.
Printing at the right size
When you print, choose "Actual size" or 100% scale. "Fit to page" shrinks everything and your labels will come out too small. Print one sheet on plain paper first and check it against the jar.
FAQ
What size label for an 8 oz candle jar?
8 oz jars differ between suppliers, so measure the straight, flat part of your jar. Many small makers use a 2" to 2.5" round label or a rectangle label that is a little shorter than the flat area.
How do I calculate a wrap-around candle label?
Multiply the jar's outside diameter by 3.14 to get the circumference, and add about 1/4" for an overlap. A 3" diameter jar needs a wrap of roughly 9.7".
Why are my printed labels smaller than expected?
Your printer is probably set to "Fit to page". Print at 100% or "Actual size" instead.
